I am trying to locate the place in the app styler where I can set the Alternate Color of rows. The property referred to in code samples does not appear in the stylemanager. What am I missing.

That setting is found on the GridRow role (you can easily get there by hovering over a row in your grid and pressing 2).
On that role, look for the OtherStates>AlternateItem in the Properties pane. There you will find the settings you can set for your odd rows.
