The app can browse the structure of the site but when I get try to download a document I get a connection error after about 2 mins of waiting

To troubleshoot this further I require technical logs produced from SharePlus. Please follow steps here, after reproducing the issue a few times.

Hi Please see responses below. Also for information our sharepoint server sits behind an ISA Server if that makes any difference. Where do I send the logs to?

We will need you to send us the app logs in order for us to get further information on the error.
Please click here and follow the steps in that forum post in order to enable and send us SharePlus' technical logs after reproducing the issue a couple of times.
We will also like to know what's the size of the file.
