Thank you. We decided to move up to 15.1, but now we are having issues updating the solutions to the new version.  We were able to install the new version, but in the IDE the check for updates freezes and closes Visual Studio (both 2012 and 2013). The user doing the update is an admin, but we think that there may be a firewall issue.

Is there a non-IDE tool that updates the solution(replaces old dlls with new)?

If the Version Utility tool fails then it is recommended to go ahead and manually replace the assemblies in your project. Here are the steps you need to follow:

1. Get a copy of your project that you have not modified with Version Utility
2. Make a backup copy of your project
3. Replace all old assemblies in the Bin folder with the new
4. Open your project with Visual Studio and press Ctrl+H (Quick Replace)

Enter the following Values:
Find what:  .v14.x Version=14.x.2014x.xxxx  This should be your current version of ver.14.x , you will need to change it. // I assume you project currently uses 14.1 or 14.2
Replace with:  .v15.1, Version=15.1.20151.1018 (This is the current version)

Look in: Entire Solution Select Entire Solutions to change all existing references in your project
Click on the “Replace All” button

5. Create a new empty project or website and drag any control from ver 15.1. A  new ig_res folder will be generated in the project. Copy this folder to your project if there is such folder then overwrite it.
6. Remove licenses.licx and App_Licenses.dll the should be located in:
C:\...\YourPoject:\licenses.licx
C:\...\YourPoject:\Bin\App_licenses.dll
7. Clean and rebuild your project.
