Silverlight Product Version Strategy

Jason Beres / Friday, March 27, 2009

As many of you know, last week Microsoft released the first public bits of Silverlight 3.  This is a major step forward for the Silverlight platform; there are lots of great new features that make Silverlight even more exciting to build rich, interactive experiences on the web.

The Infragistics Silverlight strategy is to release products on the current version of Silverlight published by Microsoft.   This could mean the unreleased CTP products from Infragistics are built on beta or CTP products from Microsoft.  Here is the current breakdown:

  • The NetAdvantage for Web Client Silverlight controls are all targeting Silverlight 3 as of the March 23rd CTP – we will no longer be releasing Silverlight 2 versions of that product in CTP or once it gets to RTM.  The RTM of this product will be on the Silverlight 3 platform.
    • Note that this is an unreleased product with a Summer 2009 ship date.
  • NetAdvantage for Silverlight Data Visualization was released on March 2nd on the Silverlight 2 platform - we will continue maintenance on this product under Silverlight 2 until we release a Silverlight 3 version in Summer 2009.  At that point, we will target Silverlight 3 as the release platform for the NetAdvantage for Silverlight Data Visualization product and all maintenance will target Silverlight 3.

Why are we moving to Silverlight 3 now?

It is all about feature-set and time to market.  With the release of Silverlight 3 later this year, and the readily available beta to developers, we can take advantage of the much richer feature set in Silverlight 3 for our controls.  This means richer features in the controls when we release, in turn a better user experience for your customers!

Let me know if you have any feedback on this, and what you all are doing on Silverlight today and in the future …
