I use webdatagrid and would like to filter for an empty string. Unfortunately, there is no filter rule like "empty" or "Not empty". Any suggestions are welcome, thanks.

After looking into this and doing some research, custom filtering rules have been determined to be a new product idea. I would recommend you to log it at https://www.infragistics.com/community/ideas, the Product Ideas site allows you to suggest new product features, new functionalities in existing products and controls, and even request new controls and products altogether.
