Is there any support in the WHDG for a column chooser or do I need to create my own?

What do you mean by a column chooser. Is this a menu or something on the client that shows and hides columns? Currently, this is not a supported behavior. However, hiding and showing columns on the client is possible. So you could create your own drop down and the set_hidden(true/false) on the columns to show and hide.
If you would like to see this behavior added, please submit a feature request for it.

Yes - a feature similar to that in the existing UltraGrid for WinForms. I have written my own but am having issues - in which function should I hide columns and how do I ensure that child items (I am using manual load on demand for an 'n' level grid) display correctly when columns are hidden?
I have added the column hiding to the InitializeRow event and I get a strange behavior with child rtows having all of their columns merged together rather than lining up with the heading of the parent.

Currently, a column chooser feature is not an available feature of the WebHierarchicalDataGrid. However, as David mentioned, hiding and showing columns on the client is possible.
