File format no longer supported in vb6

Happily supporting a vb6 legacy product on a windows 7, 32 bit virtual machine. Installed the Sheridan widgets when vb6 was installed. Everything was fine, then suddenly I started getting an error when the project loads I receive an error: File format no longer supported. I get the same error with a new project when I try to add the Sheridan 3D control component. Have registered the ocx and run VBCTRLS.REG. Any help would be greatly appreciated
