Is it possible to display a drop down list on a column header, so that a user can select an item from this list and then all records in the grid could be filtered based on this selection.

grid.DisplayLayout.Override.AllowRowFiltering = true;

Yes, you can set AllowRowFiltering on the column instead of (or in addition to) on the Override.
