I've a MVVM application with very simple grid defined as follow (below the grid configuration):

It works great. Now, I wanted to initially sort the items based on Name field. I've updated following markup:

And now, when Grid is showing there is a "Object reference not set to an instance of an object.".

I am using build 11.2.2076.
Please run the attached project on your machine.
Feel free to modify it so that it replicates.

Using your sample with version 2011.1 - works great
Using your sample with version 2011.1 SR - i got NullReference exception.
The version we are using in production is 2011.1 SR (the latest and greatest right?)
Can you check if this is bug on your side with this latest SR?
If Yes - can you provide a workaround ?

I tested the attached application with builds 11.1.1002, 11.1.2193, 11.2.2076 and could not reproduce it.
Can you provide the steps to reproduce, the specific build, and operating system you are using?
The OS is MS Windows XP Pro SP3 (with all the updates)
VS 2010, .NET Framework 4.0
This is working configuration:

I replicated the issue with build 11.1.2173. This issue is resolved in the latest service release 11.1.2193.
You should install the latest service release.
